AFCON STAT PACK: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EGYPT AND MOROCCO
All the stats and numbers you
need as the Pharaohs prepare to
take on the Lions of Atlas in
Port-Gentil
Our good friends at Opta have
complied all the numbers and stats
you need to assess the teams’
chances ahead of today’s Afcon fourth
Quater-Fina clash at Stade de Port-
Gentil.
- Egypt have only managed to secure
one AFCON victory in five attempts
over Morocco (D1 L3); scoring only
two goals across those matches.
- In fact, no team has inflicted more
defeats on Morocco in the history of
the AFCON (3).
- Morocco come into this quarter-
final having gone 12 matches
unbeaten against Egypt (W4 D8); last
losing to the Pharaohs in 1986 and
conceding just one goal in their last
eight against them.
- Egypt have now progressed from
the group stages for the ninth time in
their last 10 attempts in the African
Cup of Nations whilst Morocco have
ended a run of four appearance
without featuring in the knockout
phase.
- The Pharaohs have won each of
their last three AFCON quarter-final
matches, scoring a total of nine goals
in that time.
- Morocco have won successive
matches in the African Cup of Nations.
Only once before have they put
together a longer stretch of victories
(four in 1976).
- Egypt have gone 22 AFCON games
without defeat (W17 D5), last losing
in the 2004 tournament (v Algeria)
and have only conceded one goal
across their last eight matches in the
African Cup of Nations.
- Egypt were the only team to keep a
clean sheet in every game during the
2017 AFCON group stages.
- Morocco struck more shots off
target than any other team during the
group stages (23); only one side
(Mali, 22.2%) recorded a worse
shooting accuracy rate than Morocco
(25.8%).
- No player managed to record more
assists during the 2017 group stages
than the two registered by Morocco’s
Faycal Fajr.
- Mohammed Salah has been
involved in both of Egypt’s goals at
this year’s AFCON (one assist
followed by a goal).
- This is HervĂ© Renard’s fifth AFCON
as manager – he’s only lost two of his
22 games (W10 D10). The Morocco
boss is the only one to have won the
tournament with two different teams
(Zambia in 2012, Ivory Coast in
2015).
